    Stay Strong, Stay Healthy - Level 1 Butler Hospital 2020 (Session 6 of 16)

    Stay Strong, Stay Healthy (SSSH) aims to provide inactive middle-aged and older adults with access to a safe, structured and effective exercise program capable of building muscle and increasing bone density, thus decreasing frailty, osteoporosis and the risk of falls. SSSH helps participants meet the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s physical activity recommendations.

    SSSH challenges participants through incremental increases in exercise volume and intensity. Led by a certified instructor, participants complete a warmup, a prescribed set of upper- and lower-body strengthening exercises and a cool-down at each class. Participants are made to feel comfortable regardless of their current fitness level so they can safely participate and gradually build the strength beneficial to health.

    Private Pesticide Applicator Training

    When:  Thursday, Jan. 23, 2020, 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

    Description:

    The training is required for those producing agricultural commodities and wanting to purchase and apply restricted use pesticides on land they own, rent or crop-share. Those needing recertification training to renew their license for another 5 years may also attend. Growers wanting to purchase and apply restricted use pesticides must have a certified private pesticide applicators license issued by the Missouri Department of Agriculture. Successful completion of University of Missouri Extension private applicator training is the requirement for receiving the license. You must also be at least 18 years of age and directly involved in the production of agricultural commodities to apply for a certified private applicator license. There is no charge for the training, but EPA requires that each farm have a copy of their core Pesticide Applicator Manual, which has a charge of $12.

    Native Warm Season Grass Management Workshop

    This workshop will focus on ways to enhance or improve the forage base of central Missouri grass farms. The primary focus will be on establishment and management of native warm season grasses. Our featured speaker is Dr. Pat Keyser, Professor and Director of the University of Tennessee Center for Native Grassland Management at Knoxville, TN.

    Dr. Keyser will present two talks: “NWSG Establishment” and “Long-Term NWSG Management for Grazing and Hay Production”.

She’ll share the stage with local businessman Mike Hickinbotham, from Custom labs, to complete the discussion by describing "How to determine which commodity most affordably covers the herd’s needed".
    Eldon Cole will present "Results of 50 steer feed outs", to help beef producers determine how frequently it is profitable to retain ownership.
    Finally, Peter Scharf, MU state soil specialist, has been invited from campus to address "Production limitations experienced locally due to lack of potassium and sulfur in our soils".

    Dinner will feature catering from local favorite, John Sullivan, and begins promptly at 6 PM.

    Jan 2020 Story Lounge: A Single Step
