The Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) is a community-based program which assists participants in maintaining quality of life when faced with chronic medical conditions. The CDSMP is provided in two and a half hour sessions, once a week for six weeks, in community settings (e.g. senior centers, churches, libraries). People with different chronic health problems attend together. Workshops are facilitated by two trained leaders, one or both of whom deal with chronic diseases themselves. Subjects covered include: 1) techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation, 2) appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance, 3) appropriate use of medications, 4) communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals, 5) nutrition, and 6) how to evaluate new treatments. Classes are highly participative, where mutual support and success build the participants' confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives.

MU Extension in collaboration with Drury's Center for Community Studies is hosting a series of open community meetings and workshops to develop a 'Vision Toolkit' for a comprehensives, community wide vision for Webb City. The process is intended to be intensely participant driven, BUT we need people to attend to be heard. Five (5) architecture students are working with a diverse Vision Advisory Committee and need YOUR participation to build the integrity of a 20-30 year citywide vision for Webb City.
This visioning effort is intended to develop a broader discussion of how the study area in Webb City can better realize its important potential for placemaking, heritage tourism, transit, housing, 'city repair', and related economic development.
Since Spring 2007, the academic collaboration between MU Extension and the Drury Center for Community Studies has assisted 28 communities with 30 visioning projects resulting in 5 DREAM Initiative communities and economic activity in the projected range of 20-30 million dollars. For each community this represents a first step along a path toward revitalization, entrepreneurship, economic development and overall sustainability.

Has the cost of heating your home this winter put a crimp in your budget? Do the utility bills seem to constantly spiral upwards? Would you like to reduce your monthly utility bills? If you answered yes to any of these questions you should make plans to attend the Low Cost Home Energy Savings Tips and Tools Workshop.
The workshop is designed to feature low cost practices that can have a large impact on the home energy bill but are still simple enough that most homeowners can implement them on their own.
This workshop will demonstrate how to use a home energy checklist to evaluate that steps you should take first and what has the potential for the greatest and fastest payback. Weatherization of your home to keep the cold/hot outside air from coming into your home will also be a focus. Different types of weather-stripping and caulking materials will be discussed as well as some hands on exercises to show how to choose and install the proper material for each situation. Insulation is an important item for your home and what the recommended levels and the different types of insulation that can be used will be covered. The session will also include information on the ENERGY STAR program and a series of five-minute energy saving tips.

The Master Gardener program provides in depth horticultural training to individuals throughout Missouri. Those trained through the program volunteer their time applying what they have learned to help others in their communities to learn about gardening. To become trained as a Master Gardener, an individual must attend a 30 hour Core Course Training. Then the Master Gardener trainee is required to give 30 hours of volunteer service back in approved University of Missouri Extension activities. A large percentage of volunteer hours is dedicated to providing assistance with the heavy workload of horticulture questions in county Extension offices. Through activities such as Extension hot lines, workshops, speakers bureaus, garden show booths and demonstration projects, Master Gardeners provide gardening information to thousands of Missourians each year.
