The goal of the Advanced SSSH program is to increase on the fitness base acquired from SSSH by adding new and more challenging exercises. Advanced SSSH is designed to challenge older adults in new and different ways, to help avoid staleness and plateaus, and to improve activities of daily living. This program features exercises using resistance from body weight, hand weights, and ankle weights. It also features balance exercises, core exercises, low back exercises, and flexibility exercises.
Class members will warm-up, complete 2 sets of a series of 9-10 exercises and then cool down.

Stay Strong, Stay Healthy (Session 5 of 20)

Missouri’s Stay Strong, Stay Healthy (SSSH) program is designed to increase aging adults’ access to a safe, structured, and effective strength training program. Over the 10 weeks, participants learn exercises to improve their strength, flexibility and balance. At each session, a prescribed set of 8 upper and lower body strengthening exercises are done along with warm-up and cool-down stretches. Participants are made to feel comfortable regardless of their current fitness level so they can safely participate and gradually build the strength beneficial to health.
Warm-up, two sets of 8 strength-training exercises and cool-down will occur in this class.

Stay Strong, Stay Healthy is an eleven week program for middle-aged and older adults. The program's goal is to improve health and quality of life. We will be incorporating: warm-up exercises, simple strengthening exercises (with or without weights), and cool down stretches. Strength training can benefit you in many ways: Arthritis relief, improve balance, enhance flexibility, strengthen bones, weight control, lifts depression, stress reduction, reduce risks for heart disease, maintain healthy blood sugar levels, etc.

Cooking Matters (Session 5 of 6)

Cooking Matters is a culinary-based nutrition education program that aims at reducing food insecurity and empowering individuals and families with skills to cook at home.
Two hours include: engaging Nutrition & food safety discussions and food preparation. Participants make two recipes and enjoy eating together and discussing skills learned in class. Participants also take home groceries to make one of the recipe at home

The ten week Stay Strong Stay Healthy course is a moderate intensity, progressive exercise program that includes strength and balance training and is designed to improve muscle strength, dynamic balance, and flexibility.
Participants will be led through warm-up, strengthening and cool-down exercises focused on improving their health and well-being, building muscle, and increasing bone density and balance.

Eat Well, Be Well with Diabetes

Relatives As Parents--Northland Grandfamilies (Session 6 of 23)

Platte Woods United Methodist Church

The Northland Grandfamilies program serves grandparents in Clay and Platte Counties who are raising their grandchildren. The program also serves aunts/uncles and other relatives who are raising children under the age of 18. The program seeks to raise awareness of the issues facing grandparents/aunts/uncles who are filling the parenting role. Advocacy, education and referral services are important aspects of the program. Support group meetings are scheduled twice a month, with guest speakers on topics of interest. The program is made possible by a partnership of the Clay County Extension Council, the Platte County Senior Fund and Clay County Senior Services.
Evening support group meeting this month will feature guest speakers from the Platte County Health Dept., Angela Smith, RN and Heidi Loecke, WIC Coordinator. Their topic: "Discover What the Platte County Health Dept has to Offer".
Any grandparent who is raising grandchildren age 18 or younger is welcome to participate in Northland Grandfamilies. The program is also open to aunts/uncles and other adult relatives who are raising children. The program is free of charge. This is two separate workshops combined for a total of 2 clock hours for childcare providers. The "Setting the Stage for Eating Well-The Nutrition Environment" training discusses why and how to create a child care environment that encourages children to eat well and practice healthy eating habits. While the "Healthy Habits for Life-Teaching Nutrition to Preschool Children" training covers the importance of nutrition education and physical activity in the preschool curriculum. Participants will receive teaching resources and share ideas. This is most appropriate for teachers of 3 to 5 year olds.
