Introduction to covercrops for home vegetable gardens

Have you ever thought of incorporating a cover crop planting into your home vegetable garden management plan? Cover crops or green manures are often planted during the off season to improve the soil structure of vegetable gardens. Planting a cover crop is essential to organic vegetable gardening. Not only do cover crops prevent soil erosion during winter, cover crops also serve as catch crops; taking up nutrients from the soil that might leach from the soil profile during the off season, and recycling those nutrients back into the soil profile prior to spring planting.
This class is designed to cover the basic principles of planting cover crops in home gardens. Students will learn about the benefits of planting cover crops, how and when to plant summer and winter cover crops, what cover crops are commonly planted in Missouri, and when cover crops should be incorporated into the soil prior to planting.

On November 14, 2013 from 6:30-8:00pm the University of Missouri Extension, Phelps County will be offering the class “Introduction to cover crops for home vegetable gardens.” The class will be held at the Phelps County Courthouse Multipurpose room, on the first floor of the Phelps County Courthouse located at 200 N main St. Rolla, MO 65401.
Patrick Greenwald horticulture specialist with the University of Missouri Extension will be instructing this course. The cost for the program is $6.00 payable in advance at the Phelps County Extension Center by November 12, 2013. To reserve a seat call the Phelps County Extension Center at 573-458-6260.
