Have you ever thought of incorporating a cover crop planting into your home vegetable garden management plan? Cover crops or green manures are often planted during the off season to improve the soil structure of vegetable gardens. Planting a cover crop is essential to organic vegetable gardening. Not only do cover crops prevent soil erosion during winter, cover crops also serve as catch crops; taking up nutrients from the soil that might leach from the soil profile during the off season, and recycling those nutrients back into the soil profile prior to spring planting.
This class is designed to cover the basic principles of planting cover crops in home gardens. Students will learn about the benefits of planting cover crops, how and when to plant summer and winter cover crops, what cover crops are commonly planted in Missouri, and when cover crops should be incorporated into the soil prior to planting.
