Format:
Curriculum
Language:
Spanish
Target
Audience:
Parents in a group led by a facilitator
Description:
This curriculum
is designed to combine group and at-home learning by parents of adolescents. It includes a facilitator’s guide for the group leader, a
video for use in the group, and a set of 10 videos and parents’ workbooks that
parents in the group can check out and view at home with their teens.
Each of the units in the curriculum starts with a video segment depicting
a typical issue. Parents are expected to learn background information and
complete activities designed to build and enhance their parenting skills, and
work through structured activities with their teens.
Reviewers’ Comments:
Video is good, but not as effective as it could be because it is dubbed, and therefore gives a feeling of being removed - not talking to you.
The book [facilitator's guide] is more appropriate than the video. The video is dubbed - however, the material presented is research-based and includes important issues parents face.
A good text that addresses parenting of adolescents. Includes activities. Information seems useful and appropriate. Based on risk factors and resilience research.
Addresses adolescent issues such as drugs, violence, teenage pregnancies, and breakdown in communication with parents and teachers.
This video depicts a variety of family structures and socioeconomic status. The video is not recommended because it is dubbed and very distracting.
The video is meant for all audiences - white, African American, Hispanic.
Not specific to Latino culture. It does have a Hispanic family showcased - only in one segment.
In general terms encourages cultural pride - not specific to Latino culture (video only.)
It tries [to address children’s questions about racism] but it does so in a weak manner - only in the video, not the book.
It tries [to discuss tolerance as a means of valuing diversity] in the video, but, again, this is very weak.
[Addresses intra-culture prejudice] somewhat in the video, but not in the written material.
